Notorious group Anonymous Friday evening hacked Deputy President William Ruto’s Twitter account.

They also hacked the government’s critical accounting system Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS), which contains sensitive financial data.

The group said it had taken control of other government websites, demonstrating Kenya’s security vulnerability even as the government endeavours to do more business online.

The group also published a Safaricom number on the Twitter account, claiming it was Ruto’s.

“It’s a lie,” said David Mugonyi, Ruto’s spokesman. “That number is not his.” The account was restored later in the evening.
IFMIS website http://www.ifmis.go.ke/ was inaccessible by the time of going to press.

According to the government, IFMIS “is an automated system that is used for public financial management. It interlinks planning, budgeting, expenditure management and control, accounting, audit and reporting.” It is designed to improve systems for financial data recording, tracking and information management.

Also hacked was the website for Immigration and Registration of Persons http://www.mirp.go.ke/ and http://www.westernkenya.go.ke/. The attacks came just days after the group took control of Kenya Defense Forces’ account and that of spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir.

However, earlier yesterday the gropu vowed to infiltrate Israel government’s online resources to protest the country’s bombardment of Gaza in which more than 600 people have died.

Anonymous is a loose online network of activists.
