Senate calls for new security agency in city

Senate now wants the Nairobi City Inspectorate Department transformed into a metropolitan security agency, armed to fight insecurity and placed under the command of the Inspector General of Police.

The House yesterday passed a Motion moved by Majority Leader Prof Kithure Kindiki seeking the creation of a security agency within the city to compliment the national police in the fight against crime within the metropolis.

Senators were unanimous in passing the Motion, saying the creation of such a security unit would help arrest the serious crimes within the city and assist law enforcers in fighting terror suspects.

“If we transform this inspectorate department, it can participate in complementing police work and other law enforcers to create confidence to both Kenyans living in the city and foreign investors, given that this is our economic hub,” said Kindiki. “Nairobi is currently facing serious threats to security and social order, and requires the services of a metropolitan service similar to those employed in other major cities,” he said.

Seconding the Motion, Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang’ said the city required special security attention and the formation of a metropolitan unit would help in combating criminal activities.

“Once we have formed that in Nairobi, then we will replicate it in other major towns like Mombasa, which also face a serious threat especially of terror attacks,” he said.
