Plans are at an advanced stage for the construction of a Sh28 billion hospital in Eldoret after the government earmarked funds for the mega project.

The proposed 4,000-bed facility, to be one of the largest in Africa, will be established on a 200-acre land at Kiplombe, on the Eldoret-Iten road.

Kenyatta National Hospital, the largest public health facility in the country, has a bed capacity of 1,800 with at least 6,000 staff members.

According to the plan, six multi-storied buildings and 36 nursing units will be built, with 22 new general outpatient clinics to be hosted in a three-storied building.

A Kenya Gazette notice indicates that besides the medical block that will host a pediatric clinic, there will also be an administration block, research development and innovation wing and staff apartments.

Parliamentary Health committee chair Robert Pukose disclosed that Sh18 billion will be factored in the Supplementary Budget for the first phase of the project, which has been cleared by the National Environment Management Authority (Nema).

Once complete, it will serve the North Rift, Nyanza and Western. The current MTRH facility will be handed over to the Uasin Gishu County, which lacks a level five hospital.
