The National Rainbow Coalition Kenya leader Martha Karua has condemned the action taken by police on the protesters.

Karua who is also a principal of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition says that the protesters "have felt the brutality and harassment by the police".

She tweeted that the police' actions reveal that the regime "is scared of citizens".

"It (the government) cannot suspend the right to peaceful procession and unleash a reign of terror on Kenyans. We must continue to resist until we restore our constitutional order," Martha said.

Since the mass action began, one person has been reportedly injured after allegedly being shot by police at Toi Market in Kibra, Nairobi.

In the wake of the protests, police were strategically deployed in various parts of the country to keep the demonstrators at bay.

The police lobbed teargas canisters at protesters who pelt stones at them.

Supermarkets and money exchange shops were heavily guarded by armed police officers to prevent the protesters from disrupting the businesses.

The demonstrations which were scheduled to start as early as 6am on Monday, March 20.
