Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions' learners in remote regions will access content through solar-powered tablets launched by Mama Layla, an organisation that empowers local communities.

Mama Layla has partnered with The Standard Group and Kenya Association of Technical Institutions (KATTI) to provide practical and technical content that will be preloaded on the tablets.

Glory Mutungi, the KATTI chair said TVETs are looking forward to having the technology going down to the grassroots and added that there are principals who have admitted that their institutions have no electricity.

"This technology will assist students and trainers in remote villages to get knowledge for the TVETS through the Mama Layla project," said Mutungi.

Baringo Technical College Head and KATTI North Rift chair Charles Kipkemboi said that the last mile will develop innovation and assist regions that do not have electricity.

Hanif Ahmed, the Mama Layla chief executive said the gadgets will equip the youth with technical skills from home, and added that the tablets are free and will be funded by donors and already a number of TVETs have shown interest.

He said the pastoralist children who herd cattle can use the gadget and the light to read at night. "Like the Samburu and Maasai children herd cattle all day and have no time to study. We don't have to ignore them but give them the gadgets through the donors and help them study," said Ahmed.
