Health workers from Kitui have hung their boots after going for two months without their salaries, a move they term as “breach of their agreement with the government”.
“We would like to bring to your attention that doctors in Kitui County Government have not received their monthly wages for over two months… This is in addition to no health cover for doctors in that county and perennial non-promotion, read a statement seen by standard digital.
In the statement by Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) lower Eastern Branch, the health workers have asked the resident to seek health services from other counties because of their inability to depend on their profession to meet their daily needs.
Writing to the government, the statement reads “due to your inability to pay these wages, we have therefore asked our members to seek alternative means to meet their daily needs by immediately withdrawing their services.”
The Union has also promised that other drastic measures will be taken against the employer if their issues are not resolved in a week.
Kitui county health workers join their counterparts in Mandera, Siaya and Homabay who have also been boycotting work over unpaid salaries, allowances and health cover.
Similar events have also taken place in the Rift valley where a section of health workers in Narok county gave a strike notice demanding better working conditions, promotions, comprehensive medical cover and implementation of the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The move by the medics puts the county in a precarious position just two days after the county recorded 54 cases of covid-19 cases on Tuesday- the highest county on that day.
