Wednesday was a bad day in office for basketball champions as this year's Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) games entered day two in Eldoret.
Dr Aggrey lost 61-72 in their second Group B match to former champions Laiser Hill while Kaya Tiwi succumbed to a 42-45 defeat to Ototo Mixed from Nyanza region. The two sides must win their last Group matches in order to remain on course to defending their titles.
While Dr Aggrey may have it easy taking on Wajir High from North Eastern, Kaya Tiwi face an uphill task because they must beat in-form Butere Girls and also hope that Ototo losses to Hon DM Amin from North Eastern or they don't win with a bigger margin because points will determine the team that advances to the semi-finals.
Laiser Hill coach Erick Mutoro said that his boys mental strength won the match.
"It was a very tough game that could only be won by the team with mental strength and I'm glad the boys had it in them. Our strength was in attack and we now focus on our next match," Mutoro said.
Dr Aggrey's tactician Robert Aran on the other hand said that his boys were not at their best and lost to a good team.
"We didnt play to our best today and lost to a good team. However, we are still confident that we will retain our title."
Deng Weui starred for Laiser Hill with 17 points whereas Deng Ring and Moses Alier added 15 and 13 points. Joseph Ngundi scored 18 points for Dr Aggrey while Deng Akok complemented his effort with 15.
Laiser Hill were keen to win from the onset and calling the shots to take the first quarter 18-15. They seemed to have done their homework very well and knew how to outclass their opponents. They dominated the second quarter taking it 22-10 for a commanding 40-25 lead at the breather.
Not ready to go down without a proper fight, Dr Aggrey were more composed in the second to reduce the deficit to seven points at the end of the third period. Laiser Hill would take the fourth quarter 15-11 to seal the victory and secure their place in the last four.
In Group A, Dagoretti High and Lukenya secured their semis slots after winning their second matches respectively. Lukenya beat Friends School Kamusinga 77-69 while Dagoretti thrashed Thika High 109-41. The two sides will meet today to determine the top two spots in their group. Laiser Hill will play Onjiko in their last Group B match.
Loreto Limuru also sealed their place in the semi-finals after beating St Joseph's Kitale 23-34 in their second Group B match. Our Lady of Mercy South B registered their first victory to revive their hopes of reaching the semis after dismissing Clay International 56-28.
In rugby 15s, Butula Boys cruised to the semis after beating St Anthony's Kitale 27-10 in their second Group B encounter.
Rayvon Ambale scored two tries and a conversion for Butula with Adrian Khwesa, Michael Macharia and Bruce Opiyo touching down once for the Western champions who are eying the national crown. Kisii School thrashed Kwale High 28- 0 to chalk their first win.
