72 health workers contract Covid-19 as tally hit 2,989

At least 72 health workers have so far tested positive for the Covid-19 disease as Kenya records another 127 cases in the last 24 hours bringing the country’s tally to 2,989, Health CAS Rashid Aman has announced.

Speaking during the daily update on the Covid-19 situation in the country, Aman (pictured) said that 19 out of the 72 medics are being managed in different health facilities in the country.

“Health workers are perpetually at risk of contracting various infections including Covid-19, but this has not hampered them from discharging their duties,” he said

 On Tuesday Kenya tested 2,247 samples tested raising the country’s tally of samples tested to 100,683.

Aman said three more patients succumbed to the disease bringing the total number of fatalities to 88.

On a positive note, Aman announced that 24 patients were discharged from hospital bringing the number of recoveries to 873.

“We would have wished to be discharging more patients than admissions, but this is not the case because we have only discharged 24,” he said.

Of the new cases, Nairobi County has 62 followed by Mombasa with 34 as Busia recorded 14,  Machakos (4), Bungoma(3) while Kwale  and Uasin Gishu counties have one case each

In Nairobi County, Kibra is the worst hit with 21 cases, Westland (14), Kamukuji (5), Langata (4), Dagoretti North (3) Makadara, Embakasi South and Embakasi West one case each.

In Mombasa, Mvita (8), Nyali (7), Chamgamwe (6), Kisauni (4) and Likoni (3).

In Busia County, 14 cases are from Malaba border point

The CAS said the high number of positive cases being recorded in the past few days is as a result of the rising sample size.

“Our sample size has grown which makes the numbers go up,” he said.
