Nyeri welcomes amateurs for the Mount Kenya Championships

An estimated 78 top leading Amateurs will be pitching camp at the par 72 Nyeri Golf Club’s Course in the 71st edition of the Mt. Kenya Championship that kicks off from on Friday.

The three days 54 holes stroke play Championship that has drawn the Amateurs from across the Country will all play in the first two rounds today and tomorrow after which the top 36 and ties will make the cut to the final round on the final day on Sunday.

The first round today starts at 7AM with the team of J. Komen, B.Omondi and P. Nderi while  the  last flight  of George Eshuchi, Victor Chesumei  and Gabriel Miungi tees off at 1.08 PM;

The event has historically been held every first weekend of February every year, however, this year it could not be held due to unfavorable dry course conditions which resulted in its postponement.

Club Captain Jacob Nyaga has confirmed that the course is currently in great shape to host the elite amateurs and has also invited fans to come and cheer the golfers.

The Amateurs will be battling out for the prestigious title and a cash prize of Ksh. 400,000 proudly sponsored jointly by The NCBA Bank and Communications Authority of Kenya.

This is  one of the ongoing 26 series  in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship  (KAGC) 2023  Calendar organized by the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) which  counts  to  Golfer of the year and  also  earns points to the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

The defending Champion Chris Andrea from Ruiru Sports Club will be expecting a tough battle from Elvis Muigua of Kiambu Golf Club who won the Gold Fields Trophy at Kakamega Sports Club last weekend.

Among other notables include Adel Balala from Vipingo Ridge and Ruiru Open Champion and Team Kenya Captain Dennis Maara from Limuru Country Club.

The series started in January with Sigona Bowl at Sigona Golf Club and the last one will be the Nyali Open Championship that will be held at the Nyali Golf and Country club course in Mombasa County from December 8th-10th.

Elsewhere Kiambu Golf Club will be Celebrating its Centenary with a Golf tournament tomorrow on Saturday which has attracted 150 golfers.

The tourney starts at 6.30Am with the team of Daniel Mugambi, Wifred Githua, Charles Gitau and Joseph Mwariri while the last group will be the team of J.Karuga, Mwangi Ngibuini, Andrew Muhoro (g) and Timothy Kariuki  teeing off at 1.00 pm;

Kiambu Club boasts a long and proud history, dating back to its formation in 1916 as a 3 hole course   and has  over the years evolved  through  thick and thin to establish itself as a vital part of  the  local community in both sporting and social.

It has long been regarded as one of the best 9 hole courses in the country, attracting visitors from surrounding areas and popular with golfing Tourists from around the country.

The club has also provided a strong platform for competitive golf, offering a good selection of events to its members throughout the year.

And at the Kenya Railways Golf Club course in the Capital City Nairobi, other Golfers will be trying their luck in the Chloride Exide Golf tournament in the same day.

Golfers J.Kariuki, D.Kingi, F.Kimanzi and Any other late entry player will open the course by being the first group to tee off at 6.40 AM while the last group to tee off at 1.40 PM will be that of M.Ndegwa, R. Omanyo, A.Rogo and C.Wanjiku.
