Home golfer George Gachaiya fired 37 stableford points to lift C.N Wangari Chairman’s Prize curtain raiser at par 72 Limuru Country Club on Friday .

The handicap 20 edged out winner Patrick Mwangi, runner-up Paul Muchangi, first runner-up Kelvin Muchiri and lady winner Wambui Gitonga on countback to win the title.

The 39-year-old father of three attributed the victory to preparations he had on the lush course during the week.

“I had an extensive practice on the greens on Wednesday. “I rectified my mistakes before I headed for the tournament,” Gachaiya said.

Gachaiya said he had difficulties on the fairways in the first nine because of the barriers involved.

He bogeyed hole three which had a dam to the right and hole four.

“I was not impressive in the first nine but I was good in the back nine that earned me the victory,” he said.

This is the first tournament that Gachaiya has won since he picked up the a few years ago.

While thanking the Standard Group Plc for sponsoring the event, he said: “The support we have received from the media house helped us much given the challenges occasioned by Covid-19.

“We are grateful that sports is opening up and things are gradually getting back to normal.”

Chairman emeritus Wangari Ngugi Kamau was impressed with the turn out as over 220 players competed at the event.

“The weather was good, the course was in great shape and the players showed up in style,” said Kamau.

“We are grateful to our sponsors who showed up in a big way. They were able to interact with the players making it a good day in office,” she added.

Kamau said the tournament encouraged more women to take up leadership responsibilities in their various clubs.
