Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has thanked people for their messages of support following his father’s tragic passing in Brazil on Wednesday.

Jose Becker, 57, was swimming in a dam near his holiday home in the southern region of Brazil, near the town of Rincao do Inferno on Wednesday, and police later located his body during their search at 11:59pm.

They are not treating the death as suspicious and there are no signs of foul play.

Tributes have poured in from across the footballing world, with Liverpool leading them with a statement which read: “The thoughts of everybody at the club are with Alisson and the Becker family at this incredibly sad and difficult time.

“The club requests that the privacy of Alisson and his family is respected during this time.”

Alisson has now posted for the first time since his father’s death, writing on his personal social media account: “I would like to thank everyone for the messages and tributes to my beloved father! Our family feels loved by everyone! May God bless each one’s life!”

The painful news comes just weeks after Jurgen Klopp’s mother died, with the Reds boss unable to attend the funeral in Germany due to coronavirus quarantine rules.

Mirror Sport understand that Liverpool will fully support any decision the Brazilian makes in terms of attending funerals and allow him to absorb the news of his passing and give him time to recover.

Jurgen Klopp is believed to have held lengthy talks with the player since the news emerged, where it has been made clear he will back any decision he makes.

Should the 28-year-old return to Brazil, it is likely he would be forced to quarantine for 10 days upon his re-entry into England.

That would mean he would miss a number of games, although there is no pressure on Alisson to prevent him from travelling.
