As battle for the Kenyan Premier League title gathers momentum and struggle to escape relegation zone intensifies, so it is with the race for the most coveted individual award, the golden-boot.
With five matches remaining to the end of the 2014 season, Gor Mahia’s prolific striker Dan Sserenkuma is in the course of winning his second golden-boot.
The Ugandan import has scored 12 goals including his recent brace against Chemelil Sugar, which have made him a bookmakers’ favourite to reclaim the 2012 award.
Sserenkuma is followed by Sofapaka’s burly forward Enock Agwanda, Michael Olunga (Thika United) and Steven Waruru (Ulinzi Stars), who are tied on eight goals.
The third slot is jointly held by four time golden-boot winner John Baraza of Sofapaka, Thika United captain Dennis Odhiambo and Sony Sugar’s Edwin Oduor have scored seven goals each, one ahead of Ekaliana Ndolo (Sofapaka), Ismail Dunga and his Tusker teammate Jesse Were (who so far, has netted the only hattrick in the league).
Tusker midfield maestro Brian Osumba, his teammate Clifford Alwanga, Enos Ochieng (Muhoroni Youth), Kepha Aswani (Bandari) and former KCB striker Paul Kiongera, who moved to Simba SC, lie fifth with five goals each.
AFC Leopards’ Noah Wafula, Abass Akinyemi (Muhoroni Youth), Fiston Abduol (Sofapaka), Fredrick Shimonyo (Western Stima), Marwa Chamberi, Samuel Onyango (SoNy Sugar), Noah Abich (Mathare United), Roosevelt Blaty (KRA) and ex-Gor striker Rama Salim, follow with four goals to their names. Last season’s, former KCB goalpoacher Jacob Keli (now with AFC) clinched the prestigious individual award after notching 17 goals.
