Ferguson sure Vidic will give Man United edge in title race

Sir Alex Ferguson welcomes back Nemanja Vidic this afternoon, insisting his skipper is the missing piece in the title jigsaw.

The Manchester United defender returns after missing almost a whole year with knee problems. During that time he has played just five games, his latest comeback in September derailed by a cartilage injury.

This time the Old Trafford medical staff have taken their time in getting the centre half right, and Ferguson reckons a fully fit Vidic will make a massive difference to his side.

"He brings us experience, and he brings us that warrior spirit which we need in the heart of our defence, so it's important to us," the manager explained.

"Having him in the squad for the weekend is a big one for us, because it strengthens us no doubt. His experience will be key, and his ability to head the ball is important, as is his leadership, because he's our captain.

"Whether I start him against Sunderland is the issue, but we're just glad to get him back, and it's come at the right time."

While Chris Smalling earned Fergie's praise for his display as a substitute in last weekend's derby, the manager looks certain to ease Vidic back in against Sunderland, with Jonny Evans ruled out through injury.

Wayne Rooney is also a doubt after suffering a sickness bug this week, but Ferguson revealed the player has been added to his squad, and he will make a check on the striker in the morning before making his final team selection.
