An employee of the U.S. Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, while visiting the American South, encountered the drink, which a local proprietor referred to as a Coca-Cola highball. This became the earliest recorded mention of the iconic combination. Over time, this simple pairing became a popular way to introduce new drinkers to bourbon, as noted by Dave Pickerell, former master distiller for Maker's Mark. Its approachable taste made it a common starting point for many.
