Saturday's Nyayo Stadium stampede deaths must not be used to settle personal scores

As sad as Saturday’s stampede at Nyayo National Stadium, which left eight people dead, it is time to now time to leave the investigators do their work in finding out who was responsible.

The investigations should not only identify who was responsible or irresponsible, but more importantly suggest a way forward so that a similar incident is avoided in future.

It is discouraging for several quarters to attempt to take advantage of the situation to settle personal scores with their enemies. That is why calls by some quarters for some people to resign may not be the best thing to say at this point in time.

There is also plenty of speculation over what really happened and this should not be allowed because the investigators will unearth the real cause of the commotion and will be competent enough to suggest ways to avoid similar situations in future.

The best thing for all parties concerned is to co-operate fully with those investigating the matter.

For those who have been attending matches at Nyayo National Stadium over the last five years, they will agree that this was an incident waiting to happen considering that a fan died at the same venue in 2005.

One month ago, a similar catastrophe was avoided in the nick of time during an international match involving Harambee Stars. The investigators must be quick in their work and aim at offering a solution instead of just blaming a particular group.
