Insomnia significantly reduces the physical, psychological and emotional well being of the body and affects the overall performance of an individual.
With busy lifestyles and daily pressures as a result of work, family responsibilities and financial constraints, it is not hard to understand why many people rarely enjoy a good night’s sleep. Here are benefits of a good night’s sleep.
Sleep relieves body stress
Lacks of enough sleep results in increased stress levels and high blood pressure, which can result in strokes and heart attacks.
It is still unclear why we dream when we sleep, but researchers believe that memory consolidation happens in sleep. Although you might be inactive, your body keeps processing different activities, connecting memories and feelings. Getting good sleep can help you remember things better.
Refreshed and alert
A good night’s sleep leaves you revitalised and attentive during the day. On the other hand, being active and occupied will make you feel good and enhance your chances of getting good sleep.
Researchers have found that strokes and heart attacks are often experienced in the morning. This is because sleep is vital for the proper functioning of the blood vessels. Shortage of sleep is linked to cholesterol and blood pressure, all major causes of stroke and heart disorder. Your heart will be healthier if you sleep for at least seven hours daily.
People who work at night face a higher risk for colon and breast cancer. Scientists believe this relationship is brought about by varying melatonin levels in individuals subjected to night light. Exposure to light interferes with the release of melatonin hormone, which is responsible for sleep and is said to prevent cancer. Melatonin seems to reduce the risk for tumour growth. Make sure you sleep in a dark bedroom to enable your body manufacture the necessary melatonin.
