Nyanchwa Adventist School: Where Simeon Nyachae trekked to school

News
 Nyanchwa Adventist School

Nyanchwa Adventist School, or ‘Nass’ as it was nicknamed, is a privately owned secondary school in Kisii.  The school is located in Nyaribari Chache constituency in Kisii County.

It was established in 1912 by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, which set foot in the region through missionaries. The school is a mixed, day-only school.  It is on the same compound with Nyanchwa Adventist College, with whom they also share a bus.

In line with the SDA tradition, there are no activities that take place on Saturdays, which is the Sabbath and a holy day for SDA faithful. This includes cooking, playing or even reading. The school, whose KCPE code is 40703108, has not been performing well in the national exams, with the average score being C plain.

Boys found themselves occasionally fighting with the “eligible bachelors” of the neighboring Nyanchwa Boys High School, which is barely two kilometers away. The boys had a hard time protecting their girls from their mafisi boys from Nyanchwa Boys during inter-school recreational activities.

On matters food, hot porridge is better remembered as a beverage served at 10am daily. In the morning, students were given hot water to make themselves tea or whatever they liked to do with it. Students however loved Saturdays because that is when they got to enjoy their favorite meal of meat and ugali.

Popular alumni who were guided by the motto, Juhudi Zetu, Ufanisi Wetu, include former government minister and presidential contender Simeon Nyachae and Dr Vince Arasa Nyabuga, a professor at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

 Simeon Nyachae

Nyachae joined Nyanchwa Adventist School in 1941 until 1947. Others who wore light-blue shirts and gray trousers include Professor John Ochora of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and Phane Kwamboka, the chief secretary at Kenya Power training College in Ruaraka.
