Fidempa Da Beat thrilled after perfroming with Morgan Heritage

Swimming
 Fidempa Da Beat

Pulse: How was the experience performing during the Morgan Heritage concert?

Fidempa: Performing before such a huge crowd was the thrill I had missed most. Sharing the stage with Morgan Heritage was just a bonus.

P: You are not a new face in the industry more so to fans based in the Coast and Uganda. But you are not known in Nairobi. Why is that?

Fidempa: At the end of 2008, I tried to bring my music to Nairobi but there was too much talk about me sounding like a Jamaican maybe because of my accent, how I look and all. Then radio presenters were choosy at the time so airplay was a problem. But at least now they are playing.

P: You have hosted concerts in Uganda. How is the reception there?

Fidempa: It is very good. I have worked with the best there including Washington who’s one of the greatest producers. He produced Salary for Nameless amongst others. I also have collabos with Cindy, Bebe Cool and Navio. For me, Uganda is better than home.

P: Why did you decide to come back to Kenya if you are a big name in Uganda?

Fidempa: After my time in Uganda and collabo with Jamaicans, my music has grown and I didn’t want to be dubbed a Ugandan mostly by my fans based in the UK. That’s why I had to come back here and get established.

P: You mentioned collabos with Jamaican artistes. Who are these?

Fidempa: Demarco and Miss Triniti. Miss Triniti is featured on my album Tamani together with other artistes like Proff and Minayo from Uganda.

P: When did you first hit the industry?

Fidempa: My first studio recording called Dempa Luv was in 2004. It received good reception and people still like it even today.

P: You have an interesting name. How did you settle on Fidempa?

Fidempa: Fidempa has energy and that is the meaning I gave to it. Da Beat Killer is the fill up, just like 2pac had Shakur at the end but was known as Tupac.

P: Dancehall music has been dormant locally. Do you think Kenyans are still interested in this kind of music?

Fidempa: Yes of course. Kenyans love it but most artistes out there want to be like Jamaicans instead of fusing it with their own unique style to create something different. That’s why I want to focus on Kenyan artistes and form my own base.

P: What about the likes of Redsan and Wyre. Would they give you a run for your money?

Fidempa: No, we’re all different... very different. If I didn’t go out and get the experience I would have felt threatened by Redsan but not now.

P: Which are some of the local artistes you’re looking to work with?

Fidempa: Avril, Wyre and if possible, Prezzo.

P: What projects are you currently working on at the moment?

Fidempa: I want to open up a music studio and I’m working on a UK tour starting in November for the launch of my album The Hangover.

P: Lastly, are you dating?

Fidempa: I’m not married.
