They have mastered their art, know how to read the mood and connect with their fans. Wherever they go, they magically end up stealing the show. They also have the experience and a hit portfolio to show for their fame. Pulse's MKALA MWAGHESHA unveils Kenya's most popular crowd-pulling musicians
Isn’t it just amazing how some artistes manage to remain relevant and even host mega concerts without riding on the hype of a new release?
Whereas most artistes rely on new songs to create a buzz and get shows, some ride on their popularity, staying power, experience, connections with the corporates and stage presence to remain in business.
In fact, whichever corner of the country they go to, they are treated as real music heroes by all. These are artistes who have also managed to keep a clean image free of controversy. It is no wonder corporates love them as they are assured of a good show whenever they offer them gigs.
Jaguar
If there is anything Jaguar has learned about the Kenyan industry, it is the art of penning simple lyrics based on issues that affect the common man.
Take for example, the video for his new hit single Mwaka Huu. Everyone seems to relate with it as he gives a general message of hope that whoever you are, you are bound to succeed. Singles like Nimetoka Mbali, Matapeli, Kigeugeu and Nikuskize were well embraced by fans from all generations making him the most popular of Kenyan singers. And due to this strategy, Jaguar is one person who can move crowds whether on the club stage, in the biggest stadium or even in church. Over the years, he has remained consistent and relevant in an industry where many stars come and go.
Jua Cali
Whether it is the primary school boy in Makueni or the blue chip corporate CEO in Nairobi, Jua Cali fans follow him with near-fanatic zeal. He is a crowd puller and a great stage performer with tens of songs to keep the crowd thrilled. He just needs to say ‘watuuu.’ He too has learned the art of simplicity as his music also addresses everyday social and political issues. This is one guy who can keep off the recording booth for a year and still manage to put food on his table. No wonder he has christened himself Baba Yao! And his ratings just went up with the release of the video for his new hit track Karibu Nairobi.
Nonini
Nonini, the ultimate Genge Godfather, is a musical genius. Since 2007 when he released Manzi wa Nairobi and Mtoto Mzuri to the 2009 Kataa Hio and We Kamu, and now a recent release featuring Chris Adwar, Nonini has ruled the music industry with no sign of slowing down. His staying power has to do with his consistency and a style that has cut him a niche as the the Genge Godfather.
Nameless
Wherever he goes, Nameless doesn’t need an introduction, besides he and his celebrity wife Wahu hold the title of Kenya’s first showbiz couple. He is a lady charmer while on stage, a character he has banked on over the years to win fans of all ages. His energetic performances never disappoint. In fact, you can follow Nameless on a musical tour, watch him repeat each move in every town without feeling a sense of boredom. He rocked the Sportpesa Festival when other artistes with fresher hits couldn’t.
Redsan
His popularity has a lot to do with his scarcity, ironically. This is one celebrity who is hard to get but when you do get him, he will no doubt quench your thirst. He carries the image of the indisputable Kenyan, international dancehall king and well, his discography can prove it. The Step on It singer commands authority wherever he makes a stop to perform. His on-stage power is unmatchable. He is one of the few Kenyan artistes who have released a string of successful albums including Seasons of the San (2002), Red (2004), Pioneer (2006) and Versatility (2009). And there is more to come. Surely, Redsan is Badda than Most.
Wyre, The Love Child
With his innocent, smooth and shy-boy demeanour, the most hardworking artiste in Kenya is arguably the most bankable. Going toe-to-toe with Demarco at Carnivore ground, Wyre pulled a show-stopping performance that was memorable. Having done collabos with among others Cecile, Alaine and the Morgan brothers, his CV is unmatched and his consistency is evidence of a serious artiste who knows what music can do for his livelihood. He has done all this without courting a single controversy or pulling attention-seeking antics.
Madtraxx
One of the most underrated artistes around, Madtraxx has a very simplistic approach to music-he has fun while making it. A look at all his hits reveals an artiste who makes music out of the everyday Pulser life. From the club scene (Get Down), drinking sprees (Ita Waiter), new age technology (Double Tap) and even dance (Nyongwa), Madtraxx makes us enjoy what we do every day. With his new unit The Kansoul, Mejja and Kid Kora are the supporting cast to a very creative artiste.
