As he sat with his family and friends during the recent concert by Diamond, Nairobi Senator, Mike Sonko, had something pursed in his hands. It looked very much like a cigarette, but was plastic and emitted no smoke.
However, closer examination of the photos (right) show that the maverick senator could have been inhaling an electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette, a rarity in our social scenes. Most e-cigarettes are made to resemble tobacco cigarettes.
Whereas it has been claimed that these non-tobacco electronic inhaler, which release flavoured vapours or nicotine, assist in helping smokers quit the habit, the World Health Organisation in a July study maintains that this — and therefore, the safety of the e-cigs — has not been scientifically demonstrated.
