Police in Migori County are holding a man accused of attacking and threatening to kill his sister for refusing to undergo circumcision.

The incident happened at the family's Bongebo home in Ntimaru sub-County, early this week.

Sub-county police boss Ali Aliyow said the 28-year-old suspect locked his sister, 19, in a house after attacking her for her refusal to undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The girl sat her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations last year and fled to a rescue centre.

The girl's mother, who had gone to pick her from the rescue centre where she had sought refuge, was also attacked for supporting her daughter's decision not to undergo the cut.

The girl's attacker is being held at Ntimaru Police Station.

He is expected to be arraigned on Monday. Many girls who have refused to undergo FGM are facing rejection. Some of those who escaped and went to rescue centres are not being allowed back home.

A fortnight ago, three girls were rejected by their relatives as efforts to return them to their families failed. They were forced to spend the night at the Deputy County Commissioner's office.

Tobias Maroa, an anti-FGM activist, said parents of the three failed to go to Ntimaru Police Station to pick their daughters.
