Kenyan gospel singer Emmy Kosgei has recently opened up about her role as a mother and her views on traditional definitions of motherhood.

In a discussion with YouTuber Lynn Ngugi, the 43-year-old artist addressed the speculation surrounding her family life with Nigerian husband Anselm Madubuko, a well-known preacher and businessman.

Kosgei, who is based in Nigeria, explained that she already plays a maternal role to Madubuko's three children and grandchildren.

"By the time we married, my husband had three children: two daughters and a son. And grandchildren. They all call me a mother,” Kosgei shared.

During her interview, Kosgei challenged the societal expectation that women must bear children to be considered mothers. She argued that motherhood extends beyond biological ties, criticizing the pressure placed on women to give birth.

“It is subjecting women…I am not an object. Both men and women are not objects. No law says you must do this to fulfill this," Kosgei remarked.

Kosgei also highlighted her contributions beyond her immediate family, noting her involvement in various mentorship programs that support young women and families within her community and church.

“I am raising more kids than I can even tell. I am educating and feeding so many kids. I am mothering old and young women at our church,” she stated.
