2023: The year of concerts

 2023 saw some of the biggest concerts in Kenya.

2023 emerged as a challenging year for many, yet for revellers, it unfolded as the year of unforgettable concerts. Despite economic hardships, music enthusiasts set aside their troubles to immerse themselves in a wave of live performances.

Sauti Sol, the popular boy band, drew a massive crowd of over 15,000 at Uhuru Gardens. Simultaneously, emerging R&B sensation Ethan Muziki captivated his audience at Sarit Centre in Nairobi, with fans singing along word for word during his sold-out concert.

The echoes of Boyz II Men's June performance at Uhuru Gardens lingered in the hearts of thousands, not only for Kenyan attendees but also for fans who flew in from across Africa to savour the Motown experience.

The Walker Town Concert on September 30 at Uhuru Gardens showcased the Queen of Afrobeats, Tiwa Savage, in a memorable performance, providing a respite for music lovers. With Afro-music gaining prominence in the entertainment scene, Kenyans seized the opportunity to flaunt their partying prowess.

The collaboration between Tiwa Savage and Congolese maestro Fally Ipupa during the concert sparked discussions among attendees, especially since it unfolded as a remarkable Rhumba experience. Paris-based superstar Fally Ipupa left an indelible mark on his huge fan base.

Oktobafest, spanning three consecutive days and extending its reach to Tanzania and Uganda, was highly anticipated. Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz stole the show with a grand entrance in a private jet, reminiscent of his Trace Awards appearance in Kigali, Rwanda.

'The Gabzy Experience' on November 25 created waves as Gabriel Akinyemi, the British-Nigerian sensation, took centre stage at the Carnivore grounds, drawing a massive crowd for his debut performance in Kenya. His subsequent show in Kampala, Uganda, garnered praise, with some considering it superior to the Kenyan event.

Rhumba enthusiasts revelled in the Lingala sensation at the Lokole Festival, where Congolese Rhumba star Ferre Gola, also known as 'Le Padre,’ graced the Nairobi Polo Club on December 2. Joined by South African singer Nomcebo Zikode of 'Jerusalema' fame, the night became a celebration of diverse musical talents.

Closing the year on a worshipful note, the celebrated Hillsong London worship team delivered an awe-inspiring worship night at the Carnivore Grounds in Nairobi. Adding to the musical tapestry, Zoravo, an anointed singer from Tanzania, held his inaugural concert at the Nairobi Cinema, marking a significant musical milestone.
