Renowned actor Andre Braugher, a two-time Emmy winner celebrated for his roles in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Homicide: Life on the Street," has passed away at the age of 61.

The news was confirmed by his publicist, Jennifer Allen, who revealed that the actor succumbed to a brief illness on Monday.

Braugher, recognized for his distinctive deep voice, first gained prominence on the NBC drama "Homicide: Life on the Street," which aired from 1992 to 1998. His portrayal of the tenacious Detective Frank Pembleton earned him an Emmy in 1998.

However, it was Braugher's deadpan portrayal of Captain Raymond Holt in the widely acclaimed comedy series "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" that catapulted him to even greater fame. Over eight seasons, he starred alongside Andy Samberg, securing two Critics Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and earning four Emmy nominations.

As Captain Holt, the no-nonsense, Black, and gay precinct leader, Braugher left an indelible mark on the show's viewers.

Born in Chicago, Braugher's journey into acting began with a scholarship to Stanford, followed by studies at the Juilliard School for drama.

His initial screen appearance was in the critically acclaimed film "Glory," where he portrayed Thomas Searles, a free Black man who joins the first Black regiment during the Civil War.

From a Detective in "Hack" (2002-2004) to a psychiatrist on "House, M.DBraugher showcased his range as an actor, earning Primetime Emmy nominations for supporting actor in "Men of a Certain Age."

His extensive career also included notable roles in feature films such as "City of Angels," "Frequency," "Poseidon," "Primal Fear," "Duets," "The Mist," "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," "Salt," and "The Gambler."
