Nigerian actor John Okafor aka Mr Ibu is currently recovering in the ICU after undergoing multiple surgeries.

This is according to a statement issued by his family late on Monday. They also thanked Nigerians of goodwill who came out in their numbers to support one of their celebrated stars as he battled a mysterious condition that had affected his mobility.

“We want to thank God and most especially the General public for their support, encouragement, and prayers during this trying period for our dad…

“So far Daddy has gone through 5 successful surgeries, and he is still recovering in the ICU. Daddy is immensely grateful and we are thankful to the general public during this phase of our lives,” read the post in part.

The family also intends to fly Mr Ibu abroad for specialized treatment as he begins his recovery journey.

A fortnight ago, the actor pleaded with well-wishers to come to his aid lest his legs be amputated.

Through a video on his official Instagram account, Ibu, who celebrated his 62nd birthday from a hospital bed, said doctors had told him he risks losing his leg if the new round of treatment does not work.

“As I speak to you, I am still lying down in the hospital; the medical director of this hospital said that the best solution is, in case his new idea didn’t work, the best idea is to cut off my leg.

“Just see me, if they cut off my leg, where do I go from here? Please pray for me, talk to God Almighty, and I don’t want my legs to be cut off. Thank you so much. God bless you,” he said.

His daughter Jasmine Okafor confirmed that her father has been ill for some time now and has been admitted for two weeks.

Jasmine said the hospital bill was piling and the family was stretched financially.
