Lupita Nyong'o: Unconditional love does not mean unconditional tolerance

Days after announcing her split from Selema Masekela to the world, award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has been sharing nuggets of wisdom on her Instagram page.

On Wednesday, the 12 Years a Slave actress shared a post on tolerance in relationships, perhaps advising those in relationships to prioritise their peace of mind.

“Unconditional love does not mean unconditional tolerance. Unlearn that,” read her shared post.

Ever since Lupita said she had parted ways with Selema, there has been an outpouring of love and support from fans and celebrities alike.

“Thank you for all the kindness I have received from sharing my heartbreak news,” she said on 22 October via her Instagram story.

“The words of encouragement mean more to me than I anticipated. They are a balm.”

“And it feels comforting to have a little corner online for the romantically heartbroken to gather,” the international supermodel continued.

Last week Lupita said she was publicly dissociating herself from Selema as she could no longer trust him.

The actress went ahead to shed light on the pain the split has caused her and was hopeful that the lessons she has learnt will be useful to others undergoing a similar predicament.

“I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception. I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, “Whatever, my life is better this way.”

In late August this year, Lupita celebrated Selema, who had just turned 52, narrating how he lights up her days and went ahead to share snippets of their moments in a beautiful video montage.

“And THEN... the Universe saw it fit to bring this Sunshine Human into my orbit, and this day marks his introduction to life.

“Every day is full of #goodenergy and reasons to dance with @selema as my favourite playmate. Happy Birthday, mi amor!” she wrote.

Selema swiftly responded by saying he is the luckiest man alive, accompanying his comment with heart emojis.

“…sneaky, mi amor. luckiest man alive. My heart is smiling wide,” he wrote.

Lupita first introduced Selema to the world through a cute Instagram video in December 2022.
