Airport staff were right to block Miss Trudy from filming

Travel vlogger Miss Trudy on Tuesday took to her YouTube channel to express her disappointment at the treatment she was accorded at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa, while she was creating content.

Trudy said she was harassed by security personnel who asked her to stop filming but she argued that she was within her rights as her content creator to do so.

"Guys we are being stopped, we are told not to film. This is insane. And this is what we talk about being harassed as content creators at the airport. This is just so wrong," she said.

According to Miss Trudy, the airport's security officers violated her rights as a content creator by harassing and detaining her 'unlawfully'.

"I am not doing anything illegal. I am a Kenyan citizen and I am not even shooting in the security[sic], I am outside and I am being harassed," said Trudy.

However, according to the Civil Aviation Security Regulations, the airport staff were well within their rights to stop her from filming especially if she had not sought prior authorization.

According to the regulations, any person who interferes with the performance of duties of aviation security officers or lessens their ability to perform those duties has committed an offense.

Further, refusal to follow lawful instructions given by the airport operator for the purpose of ensuring order and safety at the airport is also an offense.

Such a person is liable, on conviction, to a fine not exceeding Sh1 million or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.

The incident sparked a debate on social media about the balance between the right to freedom of expression and the need to ensure public safety and order.

While Miss Trudy may have had the right to document her experiences as a content creator, it is important to note that airports are designated as protected areas/controlled security zones by the government.
