Lupita Nyong'o up against Barack Obama in Emmy Awards nominations

Actress Lupita Nyong'o has scored an Emmy Award nomination for her work on the Discovery+ docuseries Serengeti II

Lupita, 39, will go against Barack Obama (Our Great National Parks), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War), David Attenborough (The Mating Game), and W. Kamau Bell (We Need to Talk About Cosby) to compete in the Outstanding Narrator category.

Reacting to the news on her Instagram, the Oscar award winner posted several clips and photos while exploring the African plains. In her caption, Lupita expressed her excitement and gratitude toward the organisation and thanked them for the recognition.

"We nominated for an Emmy!!! Thank you @televisionacad for recognizing my narration of Serengeti II in today's nominations," wrote Lupita, adding that she loved being part of the show that "inspires me to get outtttsiiiideee wherever I am!"

The 12 Years A Slave actress first started off her video by putting up several shots of herself working on the show and included a selfie that featured a lion in the background.

She then posted a shot of herself sitting on a beach while taking in a spectacular sunset and ended the video ended with a clip of herself riding through a gorgeous savannah.

While speaking to Deadline during the original season of Serengeti, which premiered on the Discovery Channel in 2019, Lupita expressed her excitement about being able to work on the series. 

The series earned her the first-ever Emmy nomination at the 2020 ceremony, making her the third black woman to be nominated in the category.

"These beautiful creatures' stories are universal, and I am honored to help take the audience on their journey," Lupita told Deadline.

The Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on September 12.

In her acting career, Lupita has been nominated for several other awards, including a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress, which she won.
