A woman has been charged with giving birth secretly last month and abandoning the baby, leading to its death.

According to court records, Jesca Mbuto delivered inside a toilet at around 10pm at their residence in Ruaraka.

The court heard that she later packed the baby in a carrier bag and left it at the main gate. The following day at around 6am, it is said some Good Samaritans found the baby still alive.

The Good Samaritans reportedly took the child to a nearby clinic, where its umbilical cord was cut. The baby was transferred to Baba Dogo Healthcare.

When the baby’s condition deteriorated, it was transferred to Kiambu Sub-County Level 5 Hospital, where it was placed in an incubator but died hours later after developing complications.

The well-wishers who had rescued the infant reported the matter to the police, leading to Mbuto’s arrest.

Mbuto pleaded guilty before a Makadara law court, saying she committed the offence since she could not raise the child.

She said she wanted to conceal the delivery from her husband.

Meanwhile, Police in Embakasi have been allowed by Makadara law court Senior Resident Magistrate Lewis Gatheru to hold in custody a house help suspected of neglecting a child.

This was after officer Philip Tonui sought seven days to complete investigation into the case where a child went into a coma after sustaining serious injuries from falling.

In a sworn affidavit, Tonui said Josephine Naliaka had been left with the child at Villa Franca in Imara Daima by her employer Patricia Nduku.

“Nduku was on March 3, informed that her child had fallen down and he was in a critical condition. The child was rushed to hospital where he was admitted in a coma,” he said, adding that the child was responding well to the “intense medication” being administered.

“The child is still admitted to Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital in a serious condition,” he said.

The matter will be mentioned on March 14.
