Chadwick Boseman has been nominated for his first Golden Globe just six months after his death at the age of 43. The Black Panther star died in August last year following a private four-year battle with colon cancer. Now the actor is being recognised posthumously for his work in acclaimed Netflix drama film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

The adaptation of the 1982 play of the same name by August Wilson was Boseman's final film role. It follows a tense recording session in the summer of 1927 in Chicago, where racial politics in the music industry come to the fore for "Mother of Blues" Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) and trumpeter Levee Green (Boseman).

For his portrayal of Levee, Boseman is nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. Also nominated for the same award are Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal, Anthony Hopkins for The Father, Gary Oldman for Mank, and Tahar Rahim for The Mauritanian. Meanwhile, Viola Davis is also nominated for her performance in the Best Actress category for a Motion Picture Drama.

Davis will be competing against Frances McDormand for Nomadland, Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman, Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman, and Andra Day for The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Despite speculation, Boseman did not pick up a nomination for the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in Spike Lee's Vietnam War Thriller Da 5 Bloods. The Netflix film was snubbed in all major categories.

This year also marked the first time that the Best Director category was dominated by women instead of men. The three women nominated for Best Director were Chloe Zhao for Nomadland, Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, and Regina King for One Night in Miami. Also nominated was David Fincher for Mank and Aaron Sorkin for The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Elsewhere, for her lifetime achievements in Film and Television, Jane Fonda will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the ceremony.
