More than 3,000 deaths caused by road accidents in the country annually can be avoided if Kenyans observed basic traffic rules, the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) has said. NTSA director in charge of road safety Badu Katelo said most Kenyans do not take road safety seriously.

He spoke yesterday during the launch of a procession along Kisii town streets to sensitise road users on safety at Kisii University grounds.

“It is a matter of concern that more than 1,000 boda boda riders and their passengers have died due to road accidents this year alone. These are deaths that could have been avoided if all road users observed basic laid down road safety measures,” said Mr Katelo.

Kisii University Vice Chancellor John Akama urged Kenyans to borrow a leaf from citizens of developed countries like the United States, Britain, China and Japan, whose cities have many vehicles but with only a few cases of accidents reported.

Kisii County Police Commander Jebel Munene said they would ensure sanity returns on the roads by enforcing stringent road use measures.
