President Uhuru Kenyatta was on a tour of Kisumu County on Thursday to inspect a number of government projects but one thing stood out during his speech when he joked about seeking First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s approval before getting a helper in Kisumu.

"Nilikuwa naambia Raila hapa jameni... Sijui kama mama nyumbani ataniruhusu... Akiniruhusu labda naweza kupata mtu ambaye atakuwa ananitengenezea mambo yangu pande hii..." he said amid laughter. This loosely translates to: "I was telling (ODM leader) Raila Odinga: I don't know whether my wife will allow me to get someone to look after my interests on this side."

"Ndio tuwe tukitembea ukijua kuna mahali utakuwa unakula ugali ama namna gani (So that we walk knowing there's a place we can be going to eat ugali)?" he said. Kenyans on Twitter were quick to weigh in on the matter and while some encouraged the President to get a helper, others warned him that it will end in tears. There were also memes doing rounds, the most popular one being: “Pesa kidogo na ushaanza kutafuta bibi wa pili Kisumu.”

During his speech, the President also stated that the handshake he had with ODM leader Raila Odinga gave him peace. Speaking during his tour of Kisumu County, the Head of State further stated that accomplishment of government projects would have been useless if there was no peace.

“Handshake imeniletea amani kwa roho yangu…tunaweza kujenga reli, bandari, viwanja lakini bila amani na uwiano yote ni bure Tuliamua pamoja na Baba hapa hatutaki damu ya Mkenya yeyote imwagike kwa sababu ya siasa…” “The handshake gave me peace…we can construct the railway, redo the port and build stadia but if there is no peace and reconciliation it is all in vain. We (Odinga and I) decided to put an end to the shedding of the blood of innocent Kenyans due to politics,” he said.
