Mt Kenya Youth leader Moses Mwenda hits out at Sabina Chege over protests

Mount Kenya Youth Alliance chair Moses Mwenda has hit out at Murang’a women representative Sabina Chege after she led women in protests over sentiments by Emurua Dikkir MP Johanna Ng’eno and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi. Speaking to Standard Entertainment & Lifestyle, Mr Mwenda accused the legislator of not caring about her constituents and questioned why she’s never held protests to highlight the plight of girls and women in the country.

“As the chairman of the Mount Kenya Youth Alliance, I criticize the likes of Sabina Chege and other Mount Kenya leaders parading women in the streets. Instead of working for her constituents, she is taking advantage of desperate and jobless Kenyans. We have seen mothers holding their children in the cold after their houses were demolished by the government but these leaders have never taken to the streets to fight for them. I urge the youth no to be misused by politicians for their own political gain. ”

Mr Mwenda further urged politicians not to drag Deputy President William Ruto’s name into the duo’s sentiments which have attracted widespread criticism, saying that “everyone should carry their cross just like when Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was arrested in 2017 for allegedly insulting the president.”

Backlash

Mr Ng'eno is still feeling the ripple effects of his September 6 utterances made in Transmara as he was arrested and charged with two counts of offensive conduct and hate speech. He was released on September 10 by Nakuru Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Usui on a Sh1 million cash bail with an alternative Sh2 million bond. The legislator also faces expulsion from by KANU after party’s Secretary General Nick Salat demanded that he apologizes or resigns.

President Uhuru Kenyatta did not mince his words while responding to Mr Ng’eno’s sentiments saying, “There are these silly people who have been going around hurling insults against my mother. Tell them to leave my mother alone. Let them go insult their mothers.”

"Leaders should exercise restraint and avoid insults and bad language against other Kenyans. Unsavoury words against mothers and head of state is a no, no. No amount of anger justifies the use of offensive insulting language. There exist decent ways to communicate however one feels,” Deputy President William Ruto said.
