COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli is a popular face on our television screens and prior to Covid-19, he frequented various BBI rallies, asking Kenyans to support the document for the sake of unity and development. On Monday, a photo of a rather youthful Atwoli went viral after it was shared on social media.

In the photo, Atwoli, donning an oversized coat and matching trousers is sandwiched by two men and contrary to reports that the photo was taken in the 90’s, the COTU Secretary-General came out to clarify that it was actually taken in the 70’s.

He stated that the photo was taken in Limuru while attending training for branch secretaries of the trade union. “Thanks to whoever discovered my photo that has gone viral. It reminds me of the good old days at Limuru Conference Center while attending a branch Secretaries trade union course in the mid-seventies not in 90s as depicted! God Bless the long journey we have travelled,” he wrote.

Recently, the COTU Secretary-General congratulated his son Dr Lukoye Atwoli on his appointment to head the Medical College at The Aga Khan University and many could not help but marvel at their resemblance.

Through a tweet, Atwoli said his son had made the family proud and wished him God’s blessings in his new assignment. “Congratulations my son, Prof Lukoye Atwoli, on your appointment as Dean of Medical college at The Aga Khan University (EA). As a family we are very proud of you. May the Almighty God continue guiding you, growing you in knowledge & wisdom and protect you,” he tweeted.

Prof Atwoli is an expert in psychiatry with extensive leadership, teaching and academic research experience. He leads and participates in mental health research locally and globally and is a member of the WHO World Mental Health Surveys Consortium, which is the leading collaborative project in psychiatric epidemiology globally.

Prof Atwoli previously served as the Dean of the Moi University School of Medicine and has supervised a number of masters’ candidates to completion. In recent weeks he has opined on how the country is handling Coronavirus, calling for targeted testing in health care facilities due to the risks involved.

Aga Khan University expressed confidence in his abilities, saying it believes he will take the institution’s Medical College to the next level. “Given his experience and research credentials, and through his gentle but firm leadership, he brings a steady pair of hands to help the Medical College, East Africa navigate the challenges ahead,” wrote the university.
