Ex-Uhuru escort chief dies after collapsing at Chaka home, Nyeri

The former security chief in President Uhuru Kenyatta and former President Mwai Kibaki governments who died on Friday night was decorated as a diligent man who gave his all to the service.

Wachira Mathenge, who served as Deputy Presidential Escort Commander was pronounced dead at the Nyeri Outspan Hospital where he was taken to after he collapsed at his Chaka home in Nyeri County.

A postmortem examination is yet to be conducted to ascertain cause of death. Family members suspect his death could have been due to a heart attack. 

At the time of his death, Wachira was head of logistics at the Eastern Region police headquarters in Embu.

Wachira also served the police service in various positions after he left the Presidential Escort. He was at one time the Kilifi County police chief.

Former DCI chief Ndegwa Muhoro, now an envoy in Malaysia said Wachira was a jovial man. “He was my brother, a very jovial and dedicated man,” Muhoro told the Sunday Standard in a text message.

Deputy President William Ruto also mourned the top cop. “Commissioner of Police Wachira Mathenge was a dedicated and exceptional officer whose bravery in the line of duty was supreme,” Ruto said on Twitter.
