Tanzanian actress Wema Sepetu this week sent social media into a frenzy after she confessed to aborting Steven Kanumba’s pregnancy.

When word got to the late Kanumba’s mother Flora Mtegoa, she was, in an interview with Global Publishers, taken aback by Wema’s confession.

Hurt, Mtegoa requested a meeting with the actress and revealed that she preferred Sepetu over Elizabeth Michael -popularly known as Lulu, who was Kanumba’s girlfriend at the time of his demise.

“Jamani mpaka nywele zilinisisimka kabisa, natamani sana kuongea na Wema nikae naye maana uzuri ni kwamba amekiri mwenyewe kuwa alitoa mimba za mwanangu, yaani imeniumiza sana jamani.

“Natamani sana Wema aje nimuone, nina kitu nataka kumwambia na ninampenda kwa sababu ni binti wa tofauti sana kuliko alivyo Lulu, kwani kila anionapo popote anakuwa na furaha sana na mimi. Natamani Kanumba angekuwepo jamani,” said Kanumba’s mother.

Kanumba cursed me

Speaking during one her interviews for her application, Wema App, the Tanzanian socialite explained that it was because of her mistake that Kanumba cursed her and now struggles to conceive.

The teary Sepetu recalled the words the late Kanumba said to her when he learnt of her abortion: “Wewe mwanamke nakudai, nakudai watoto wangu wewe, hutoweza kuja kupata mtoto na mwanaume mwingine yeyote yule.”

Wema Sepetu and the late Steven Kanumba had dated for a while before they split and it was during their courtship that Kanumba introduced her to the film industry.

In Wema’s defence

According to the actress, she could not keep the pregnancies at the time because she was still young and her parents were looking up to her.

“Naomba niwe mkweli sijawahi kutoa mimba zaidi ya marehemu Steven Kanumba, na nilitoa kwa kuwahofia wazazi wangu kwa kuwa nilikuwa bado mdogo hivyo nilikuwa na hofu nitajieleza vipi kwa wazazi wangu.

“Hata mimi natamani kuitwa mama na hakuna kinachoniuma kama hicho. Mwafikiria nisingependa kuacha hata copy kangu siku ndo Mungu anasema ananichukua. Ningependa kupiga picha niko na mwanangu. I want that with all my life, but I can’t!” said Wema.

Trying to conceive

Despite Kanumba’s ‘curse’ Wema is determined to be a mother and for that reason is doing everything in her power to have a child.

Not too long ago she flew to India to get advanced fertility treatment for her condition, Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), where the doctor’s assured her of her chances of conceiving.

“Mwanzo nilisema nikifika umri wa miaka 30 kama sijapata mtoto, itanilazimu kufunga kizazi, lakini madaktari wameniambia ninaweza kupata ujauzito kuanzia Januari, mwaka ujao.

“Napenda mtoto wangu wa kwanza awe wa kiume,” she said adding that, “wa kwanza akiwa wa kiume ataweza kuwaongoza wenzake watakaofuata, lakini kama Mungu hakupenda hilo hata wa kike si mbaya,” she said.
