Celebrating her win as the new Miss World Kenya crown holder, Maria Wavinya says the coveted pageant has restored her quest to become a world beauty queen after failing to make the mark in the Miss Tourism Kenya heats in May this year.

“After failing to make it in Miss Tourism Nyandarua, I picked my lessons and went into the Miss World Kenya competition ready to make amends. I decided to do this like I was doing it for Kenya in the Miss World finals and there, the title came,” Wavinya, the 18-year-old Mount Kenya University first-year student told Pulse.

“My grandmother is a half Kamba and half Kikuyu and I took after her second name. I am from Nyandarua and not Ukambani as many people think. Besides, I am now Miss Kenya, proudly a national figure carrying my country’s flag to the international pageant come December 14,” said the Mass Communication student who is also pursuing a Cabin crew course at Kenya Airways.

The beauty pageant, who is working with Empowering Young Mothers (EYOM), will host the event at Eldama Ravine Garden Square tomorrow with the aim of ensuring the children have access to their basic needs.

“We are raising money for foods, clothes, wheelchairs and toiletries as a family because any guest who makes time to come will be family,” she told Pulse, adding that she expect celebrities and leading politicians to attend.
