Deputy President William Ruto was on Friday, September 20, schooled by the ‘wamlambez generation’ on new vocabularies that the ever-morphing Sheng language has adopted.
Addressing a group of youth in Dandora as he inspected construction work on the Eastern Transmission Pipeline, DP Ruto’s “mko rada, mko chonjo and mko masaa” vocabulary was recalibrated to 2019.
DP Ruto was reminded that the likes of “mko masaa” - a slogan popularized by Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu during her 1997 quest for the presidency, were of an era gone by.
"Mimi nataka munisikize kwa makini na msije mkasema kwamba hamkupata habari. Saa hii mumeniambia hamkupata habari. Sasa nimewapatia habari.Habari mumepata ama bado? mko rada sasa? mko chonjo? mko masaa?" Posed DP Ruto.
To which the excited crowd prodded him back that the ‘in thing’ to say was ‘mko rieng’.
“Mko yeye?” He inquired, to laughter from the crowd.
“Oh, mko rieng? Nyinyi siku moja mutaniua na Sheng. Kumbe mambo yamebadilika," he heartily responded on finally getting the hang of it.
The DP, apart from the pipeline project in Embakasi North, also toured Tom Mboya Primary School.
“Infrastructure development, especially in learning institutions, is key to harnessing the potential of our youth, including growing their skills for individual mobility and enhancing our progress; creating jobs; advancing equity and promoting inclusive growth,” he tweeted.
