Postpartum depression nearly cost my marriage- Actress Jackie Matubia

As more and more women are opening up about their experiences with postpartum depression, we are learning that the disorder can affect women very differently. For actress Jackie Matubia, the disorder nearly cost her marriage to Kennedy Njogu.

Normally, this disorder is suffered by a mother following childbirth, typically arising from the combination of hormonal changes, psychological adjustment to motherhood, and fatigue. In most cases, it leaves first-time mothers questing their motherhood skills and whether they were ready to have a baby. Jackie Matubia was no different.

Speaking to Parents Magazine, the former Tahidi High actress revealed that she slipped into depression after giving birth to her daughter, Zari Wanjiku in 2015.

“I had these conflicting feelings of constantly wondering whether I should have waited to have a baby and when I tried going back to work, I felt like I was not being the best mum. I would wake up and cry for about two hours and I couldn’t get myself out of it,” Jackie said.

The mother of one further disclosed that the mood disorders nearly ruined her marriage as they both knew nothing about postpartum mental health.

“It even caused some friction in my marriage because we were young first-time parents and during that period there wasn’t much awareness about such things.”
