The top female student in the 2013 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Norah Chelagat Borus is dead.

According to reports, Norah Chelagat was found dead at her University residence, at Stanford University, California on Friday June 10.

Announcing the news of her demise, the Stanford University's president Marc Tessier-Lavigne and university's Vice Provost for Student Affairs Susie Brubaker-Cole said, “deep, sustained conversation is needed about how the university can best provide the resources and necessary support for the physical, the mental and emotional well-being of all members of our campus community.”

Norah’s family spokesperson, Joseph Maswan confirmed her death adding that her family had flown to the US to get answers on what happened to their little girl.

“The family has received the shocking news. Her father and other family members have travelled to the US to establish the cause of her death,” he said.

Norah’s cause of her death is yet to be established as police launch investigations into the case.

Until her demise, Norah was pursuing an undergraduate course in Computer Science at Stanford University, California with the hope of working for Google in the future.

When the results came out, the Precious Girls Riruta alumni had scored straight A’s, emerging as the top girl countrywide and fourth overall. She was, therefore, qualified to pursue any career and was already part of the Equity African Leadership Programme when an admission letter to study medicine at the University of Nairobi arrived.

“Medicine was the wrong choice for me and to buy time, I deferred for a year while trying to find my footing. Many thought this was an outrageous decision,” she said.

She then opted to join Akad Education Group where, as part of their mentorship programme, she worked as a volunteer teacher at PACE (Promoting Access to common Education) Kenya. It was while at Akad that she applied for a scholarship to study Computer Science at Stanford University.

She received her letter of acceptance from Stanford in May 2015.

I am happy that my dream is shaping out. My aim is to work at Google and not to be a doctor,” she said at the time.

Brilliant minds gone too soon

A few weeks ago, Coast top pupil in the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations, Mary Kamanthe Mutua passed on after battling with bone marrow cancer.

When she learnt of her condition, Mary was determined to rise above it.
