Mohammed Juma Njuguna, the man who embodied flair in football commentating is no more.
The legendary voice whose flowery commentaries enhanced listening experience on radio and captivated Kenyans for over 40 years died on Saturday, June 8 at a Nairobi hospital.
According to Royal Media Services, the Citizen Radio content producer died after a long illness 20 years after joining the station from KBC.
“Inalillahi wainailahi rajiuun. Just lost my dad Mohammed Juma Njuguna,” wrote his daughter Haluwa Mohamed on her Facebook page.
The veteran football commentator was awarded a Head of State Commendation (HSC) by former President Mwai Kibaki in 2010 for his service par excellence that dates back to the ’70s.
He started his career with the then Voice of Kenya (VOK) where he steadily rose the ranks before switching to Citizen in 1999.
Through it all, Njuguna amassed a huge following with his unique style of delivery, point blank commentary, and refreshing entertainment during football matches.
“His metallic voice and superb diction reminded us there was a time when broadcasting was broadcasting; it belonged to voices you will never find in a bus stage; he was one of those voices,” said Radio Maisha’s Wellingtone Nyongesa.
He will be interred at Kariokor Muslim Cemetery later today.
