The vigil: Salute to this Changamwe cop with a big heart

Police often get a bad rap. But Dan Charo says we shouldn’t paint the entire force with a single brush of condemnation.

He is particularly proud of one Ruth Moraa, a cop based at Changamwe Police Station in Mombasa, whom he praises for coming to the assistance of a young lady who was almost raped by two men.

Charo says that the lady had been invited to Mombasa from Western Kenya by a relative who directed her to meet a man who was to assist her to get a job.

However, the man turned out to be a wolf after he demanded sex in exchange for a job. The woman refused and fled the house and sought help from boda boda operators nearby.

One of the boda guys reportedly offered to shelter her for the night. Charo wrote to The Vigil that, “The boda boda man also turned on her and demanded sex. But she declined again and was directed to report at Changamwe Police Station.”

It is at the station that she met Moraa who hosted, then assisted her to Tahmeed bus booking offices and paid her Sh2, 000 fare to Luanda, over and above giving her some pocket money after she failed to identify the men who wanted to molest her.

“I was so touched by the officer’s big heart when she arrived at the office to pay for the lady’s fare and gave her money to spend on the road,” wrote Charo.  Cops like Moraa deserve to be celebrated. We salute you, madam!
