Revealed: Doomed Indonesian flight nearly crashed day before killing 189

Indonesian rescuers and investigators looks trough the remains of the crashed Lion Air.

The Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 which crashed near Jakarta had suffered a similar problem the day before.

That time an extra crew member in the cockpit's jump seat diagnosed the problem and saved the plane.

But just a day later, with a different crew, the 737 crashed into the Java sea, killing all 189 passengers.

The new revelation, reported by Bloomberg, comes after an Ethiopian Airlines flight on the same model of plane crashed near Addis Ababa this time killing 157.

The doomed Ethiopian Airlines plane even has black box data similar to the Lion Air disaster, it has been claimed.

Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) of a Lion Air JT610 that crashed into Tanjung Karawang sea is seen inside a special container after it was found under the sea, during a press conference at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta, Indonesia, January 14, 2019.

The Ethiopian Transport Minister said this afternoon that there are "clear similarities" between the two tragedies that sent shock waves around the world.

Minister Dagmawit Moges told the Wall Street Journal: "Clear similarities were noted between Ethiopian Air Flight 302 and Indonesian Lion Air Flight 610, which will be the subject of further study during the investigation."

Investigators were able to recover all relevant data from the black boxes which were in "good condition", the minister added.

Both planes crashed within minutes of take off after pilots reported problems.

The flight from the capital Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang plunged into the sea just 11 minutes after take-off.

Belongings, including phones and ID cards were later found floating in the water by rescuers.

An investigator found that the country's national safety committee had warned the plane was not "airworthy" to fly the day before the crash.

The Boeing had experienced similar technical issues on a flight from Bali to Jakarta, a day before the fatal incident.

“All the data and information that we have on the flight and the aircraft have been submitted to the Indonesian NTSC. We can’t provide additional comment at this stage due the ongoing investigation on the accident,” Lion Air spokesman Danang Prihantoro told Bloomberg.

A preliminary report in the Ethiopian Airlines crash is set to be released in the next 30 days.

Last week it emerged that the pilot of the Ethiopian Airlines flight had made a frantic call before it crashed killing 157.

The plane had an unusually high speed after take-off before problems were reported, claimed a source who has listened to the air traffic control recording.
