Luxury car MP George Theuri gifted wife confiscated as he denies tax evasion claims

Embakasi West MP George Theuri has distanced himself from claims of tax evasion in the importation of a luxury car he gifted his wife.

One of two salon cars recently impounded by police officers over tax evasion belongs to Theuri’s wife, Cynthia Wanjiru Gitonga. In a statement by the DCI, the confiscated vehicles had been declared as semi-trailers to evade duty.

“The vehicles were declared semi-trailers hence evaded duty through an organized scheme that claims they were manufactured at a fictitious company in Mombasa,” the DCI said.

The legislator bought her the Mercedes Benz GLA-200 registration KCR 565 W in 2018 as a birthday present.

 He bought her the vehicle in 2018 as a birthday present.

Speaking to SDE on phone, he admitted that the vehicle in question is indeed his wife’s, but distanced himself from the tax evasion allegations.

“The vehicle was bought in a showroom and prior to purchasing it, a motor vehicle search revealed that everything was okay,” he said.

On March 19, the DCI confiscated two luxury vehicles at the home of a Niarobi County official over tax evasion.  

According to a statement by the DCI, the two vehicles were using motorbike registration numbers.
