Carilton Maina: Arsenal’s tribute to Kibera student shot dead by police

England-based Arsenal FC has paid tribute to Carilton Maina, the 22-year-old shot dead by police in Kibera slums on December 22.

Maina was featured in the club’s matchday programme as the played Cardiff City at the Emirates stadium on January 29.

“We were very sad to hear the recent death of Arsenal Kenya member, Carilton David Maina aged just 22.

“Born in Africa’s biggest slum Kibera, Carilton excelled academically, winning a scholarship to study engineering in Leeds which enabled him to visit his beloved Emirates Stadium to see his heroes. “Maina” adored Arsenal and watched every match he could.

“He was also a talented player, recently a goalkeeper for Gor Mahia FC and was a TEDx presenter, role model, future leader, loved by all.

“Our thoughts are with Carilton’s family and friends,” the statement read.

 

Shot after surrendering

According to The Standard newspaper, the former University of Leeds student was shot dead near their home by a police officer despite surrendering.

After shooting him on the left ankle, the officer is said to have cornered Maina between two stalls before shooting him in the chest, stomach and face as the student pleaded for his life.

As he crawled towards his mother’s house just 50 metres away still insisting he was not a criminal, two bullets ripped through his chest, leading to his death.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched an investigation into maina’s shooting.

 Maina's body is carried during his burial on 28 December, 2018.
