Kigumo Bendera High School in Murang’a County was established jointly as a mixed school in 1965 by the government and the African Christian Church and Schools.

In the 1970s, it was upgraded to a secondary school and then turned into a boys’ boarding school in 1988.

Kibesco aka Ki-flag, is the nickname of this school with a reputation for excellence in sports in the region. The school at one time was notorious for bullying, but things have since changed.

Just 30 Kibesco students were able to silence the entire neighboring Njiiri High School, Gituru Secondary School, and two days’ secondary schools. Alumni liken it to a military camp.

But however ‘tough’ these boys were, they were calmed by Kamahuha, Nginda and Ng’araria girls secondary schools and now Kigumo Girls High School that was founded recently. Michuki and Njoroge, the humorous cooks, tamed and satisfied the boys.

Today, a changed Kibesco has improved academically and in 2014 it attained 6.3 points, the highest in the history of the school.

It was here that Murang’a University College English and communications assistant lecturer Chege Samuel Ng’ang’a; Kenya Rural Roads Authority senior transport economist Nicholas Kibe and gospel musician Bobby G of the song Do They Know? were ‘monolised’, forced to buy loaf of bread, milk, margarine and give change with 50cents!
