It has been barely a month since the reigning Miss Word Kenya Finali Galaiya returned home from China where she carried Kenya’s flag high. She emerged among the top Miss World contenders.

She may not have reclaimed the Miss World Africa crown that her two predecessors won but Finali Galaiya was happy with her achievements.

Having emerged top in two competitive categories during the Sanya, China, glamourous affair, the 23-year-old told Pulse she believes the best girl won and her achievements are good enough.

She was among the top three in the Multimedia category and the best in the Sanya Tourism Video Challenge, a challenge no other Kenyan model has ever won.

“I am happy with myself and I must thank all Kenyans, starting with President Uhuru Kenyatta, for the great support they have given me.

The competition was tough and I must congratulate Vanessa Ponce de Leon who made history by becoming the first Miss Mexico to be crowned Miss World. I also congratulate Miss Uganda, Quiin Abenakyo who won the Miss World Africa crown.”

Away from Miss World Kenya, Sarah Pkyach won the Miss Tourism beauty pageant in October. The beauty, who is also the Miss Tourism West Pokot County, beat 40 other contestants to clinch the title in a colourful event at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.

She is now in Kuala Lumpur for the international finals that take place tonight. Through the former Miss Tourism Wendy Bella, Kenya currently holds the crown of Miss Tourism International Africa.

The Miss University Africa Beauty Pageant is another event that blazed the beauty world this year. Sheryl Ayiera, the reigning Miss University just returned from Nigeria where she represented the country in the Miss University Africa annual beauty pageant.

Sheryl, a Communications student at Multimedia University, won the title at an event held at the Carnivore Grounds in June this year. Goretti Mirera, a Kenyatta University student, represented the country last year.

And on Monday this week, Miss Philippines was crowned Miss Universe in Bangkok after a trailblazing ceremony praised for featuring its first transgender candidate but marred by gaffes about the English-speaking ability of two Asian contestants.

During the ceremony, Kenya was represented by 22-year-old Wabaiya Kariuki - a Daystar University student who won the Kenyan crown last month. The Actuarial Science student had emerged victorious in a field of 15 finalists.
