Eldoret Sports Club Grounds was today morning a scene of chaos after enraged fans of Tanzanian crooner Harmonize went berserk after the celebrated bongo flava artiste failed to turn up.
According to a Paschal Norbert, a resident, things started going south at the event dubbed Chaget Festival at around 1.00am when fans got wind that the star won’t be performing.
“People started turning up in large numbers at around 6pm, by 12 am the event organizers were still hyping the crowd. When they stated at around 1am that Harmonize was a no-show without reason, the partygoers started shouting, demanding for a refund. They threw stuff on stage and vandalized things. Some were injured. It went on to around 3am,” said Norbert.
Explaining what happened, Harmonize claimed that he was not fully paid by the organizers.
“Binafsi najua kiasi gani pesa inatafutwa kwa ugumu but kwa mapenzi yenu mlijitoa kuja kuni support sio kwasababu mie ni special sana....!!! Ni kwa upendo wenu tuu ila kilichonisikitisha ni promoters kuchukua pesa za watu wasio pungua 4000k then wakashindwa kuja kumalizia payment iliyobaki na kukimbia hii inaumiza sana...!!”
In the video seen by Sde, hundreds of revellers can be heard chanting ‘haki yetu, haki yetu’ while the stage lay desolate; bottles and rocks were strewn all over.
Earlier, the singer had posted about the event on his Instagram page where he detailed his rehersal for the much publicized event, urging his fans to fill the venue to capacity.
“I will be performing live in Eldoret on Saturday 3rd November. Tell a friend to tell a friend because I will be there,” he said.
When he arrived, Eldoret town almost ground to a halt and was accorded an heroic welcome.
According to the event organiser Omondi Wa Mercedes of Shado Events Initiative, the event was meant to celebrate the Kalenjin culture.
“It is believed that every Kalenjin has a chaget (jacket) in their wardrobe. On this note, the event targets to create a platform to highlight major issues touching our youths and the general public like empowerment and investment,” he had said.
Advanced tickets for the show were selling at Sh500 while VIP tickets went for Sh2,000.
