After a video of three-time 1,500m world champion Asbel Kiprop and the wife of his pacemaker in a compromising situation went viral, it has emerged that the woman in the clip attempted suicide.

24-year-old Nancy Rotich, wife to Kiprop’s pacemaker Andrew Chepsiya attempted suicide at her home in Eldoret.

According to The Standard, the business woman-turned politician was left fighting for her life after swallowing a pesticide at her Kuinet home.

Broken marriage

According to Chepsiya, Kiprop called him on Sunday night confessing to the affair with his wife which started in 2016 while attributing his recent woes to the fling.

After Kiprop’s shocking admission, Chepsiya reportedly confronted his wife and that she was to leave the following morning.

"We agreed to amicably split because our marriage was irreparably broken,” he told The Standard.

However, after packing her clothes in the morning, Chepsiya found her unconscious and rushed her to hospital.

“She wanted to leave during the night but I told her to spend the night then leave in the morning. That is when she took the pesticide in an attempt to commit suicide.

“I rushed her to hospital after my brother and I discovered that she was unconscious in bed after packing her clothes, we saw an opened packet of pesticide which we suspect she swallowed,” he stated.

“The things he (Kiprop) has done behind my back yet he is my friend and fellow athlete have really gone beyond what an enemy would do,” Chepsiya said.

Kiprop’s woes

“I am coming out clean,” said Kiprop, who attributed the affair to the troubles plaguing him in the recent past and a diminishing career.

Last year, while on his way from the Moi International Airport in Eldoret, Kiprop knocked down a pedestrian at Kapseret. He claimed that when the accident occurred, he had come from the airport to pick his lover.

The serving policeman has also been battling doping allegations after failing a drugs test, testing positive for the performance enhancing drug erythropoietin (EPO).

In his rejoinder, Kiprop accused World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) officials of extorting money from him when they came to collect blood and urine samples from him for.

He further alleged that the two officials who conducted the tests on November 27 last year might have interfered with his urine samples.

A source who spoke to The Standard on condition of anonymity at the Eldoret Hospital where Nancy is admitted said that she is in stable condition.
