Did ‘kanjo’ clean city overnight ahead of Uhuru’s Jacaranda visit?

Roads heading to Jacaranda Grounds have had a sudden and unplanned face-lift.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is said to have hired workers to sort the mess before President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visited the grounds.

The roads included those joining Donholm and Kayole, Kayole junction road, Kayole Umoja, Spine road, Bee Centre roundabout  and the Jacaranda Ground itself.

A sizable number of people, said to be county workers, were seen overnight filling the potholes, making repairs, clearing garbage and cleaning the environment.

The following day, all the roads were smooth and there was no garbage around. Hawkers had been warned to keep away.

Residents however faulted the governor saying: “It is wrong for the governor to fill potholes at the last minute to please the President. If the governor is not able to work, let him resign,” an area resident claimed.

Sonko stands accused by city residents of sleeping on the job. Nairobians have in the recent past been on the Governor’s case, with others accusing him of ineptitude.

In his defence, however, Sonko claimed that cartels he had inherited from previous administration was responsible for the mess, not him.

He however asked for more time, to sort the mess, saying that he will deliver at last.
